Our name says it all, Killearn Lakes.  Perhaps the most unique features of our community are the six named lakes.  They are: Lake Arrowhead, Lake Pine Hill, Lake Petty Gulf, Lake Diane, Lake Blue Heron, and Lake Monkey Business.  What many residents don't realize is that these lakes are really our storm water treatment system.  These are man-made lakes that were dug years ago, some when the area was still a hunting plantation.  The water from our yards and roads ends up in these holding areas.  The water eventual makes it way through the lake chain through  a series of dams and culverts eventually ending up in the large natural lake to our northwest, Lake Iamonia.

While their primary function is to hold our run-off water, our lakes also are great assets to our community.  The greatly increase the beauty of our community, provide wildlife habitat, and are the focus of some great recreational opportunities.  The Fish and Wildlife Committee, made up of homeowners, has the responsibility for managing our lakes.  Their goal is to maintain the lakes in a balanced, healthy condition.  It is not an easy task.  Controlling exotic plants in this water system, given the input of nutrient laden water, is very difficult.

Swimming is not permitted in any of our lakes.  Fishing is allowed- but it is strongly recommended that the fish be released alive as eating the fish that are caught is not advised.  Non-motorized vessels are allowed on the lakes and can be launched at ramps on Lake Pine Hill, Lake Blue Heron, and Lake Monkey Business.  Residents can obtain a key for the gates to these boat ramps at the KLHOA Office (668-3231).

Parks

There are three parks available for residents.

Tekesta Park is located off of Tekesta Drive and has a playground, basketball court, and ball fields.  There are also restrooms that can be unlocked for community events.

Valley Creek Park is at the end of Valley Creek Drive, on the shores of Lake Pine Hill.  This quiet, heavily shaded park has limited playground equipment.  You can fish from the bank.

Monkey Business Park is located off of Turkey Hill Trail in the Grand View area of Killearn Lakes.  Residents need a key to open the gate to the parking area.  There are two fishing docks, grills, and a boat ramp.

Presently there is a group of homeowners that are working on revamping the playground equipment in our parks.  If you are interested in helping with this project call the homeowners office (668-3231).
